Westpac creates an inclusive family-friendly workplace with onsite school holiday care

Overview

Westpac reported to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) that 1,445 of their working mums and 760 working dads took leave during school holidays for childcare responsibilities. When investigating Westpac discovered that 84% of their working mums are primary carers in their household. This resulted in over 7% of their team who have childcare responsibilities ceasing their employment before returning to work. It was clear to Westpac that they needed to support their parental employees by implementing an impactful support initiative to drive workplace inclusivity.

Solution

KidsCo was engaged to design and facilitate a school holiday program designed for primary school children aged 5 – 12 that aligned with Westpac’s culture and values. The onsite program took place at Westpac’s head office in the Barangaroo, Sydney. The onsite school holiday program was used to drive workplace inclusivity for Westpac’s working parents and carers who are struggling to find care arrangements, taking leave for childcare responsibilities and allowing them to bring their authentic selves to work.

Impact

After the school holiday program period, a survey was sent to participating working parents and carers.

Westpac saw an improvement in the following:

  • 93% of employees felt the programs created an inclusive Family Friendly Workplace
  • 86% of employees took less sick leave for childcare responsibilities
