Case Study: How TPG Telecom is Creating a Family Friendly Workplace

What is Family Friendly Workplaces?

Parents At Work and UNICEF Australia have united with industry and community leaders to develop National Work + Family Standards in a response to results of the National Working Families Report and the impact of COVID-19 on families and workplaces. The aim in establishing these standards is to:

Educate employers
on the importance of embracing family friendly policies and practices as an enabler of workplace diversity and inclusion, health and wellbeing

Provide a framework and guidelines
for employers to foster a family friendly workplace culture

Develop
a sustainable way of providing employers with ongoing best practice work + family research, policies and guidance

Certify employers
that meet core standards and recognise those that go above and beyond as an Employer of Choice

Family Friendly Workplaces aim to improve work life wellbeing, inclusion and equity outcomes for families by introducing a set of certifiable National Work + Family Standards for employers. As proud supporting partners, KidsCo helps organisations in terms of Family Care Standards with our School Holiday and Virtual Lockdown Care Programs to support working parents and carers.

Why is TPG Telecom committed to be a family friendly workplace?

What the last year has taught us is that flexibility is crucial to support our people in enabling how we move forward and in embracing our new hybrid way of working. While COVID-19 normalised flexibility through working from home, we know flexibility is much more than that for our people.

We wanted to support our working parents and carers during the stressful school holiday period by providing them with the flexibility and convenience they need to balance work and family responsibilities whether they’re at the workplace or working from home.

What makes your organisation family friendly? What family inclusive programs, practices and processes does your organisation currently have in place?

TPG Telecom has partnered with KidsCo Australia to deliver a school holiday program offering flexibility and support to our TPG Telecom parents and carers both onsite in the office and virtually when parents are working from home through our hybrid work model.

Parents have had the struggle of finding care arrangements, leaving work early and feeling disconnected from their children during the school holidays. Our parents and carers have since been able to experience 7-8 hours of guilt-free productivity time with their children attending KidsCo. This allows them to use their well-deserved leave when they can actually unwind and enjoy quality family time.

How have the above impacted your workplace culture and productivity? How have your people responded?

We understand the spike in stress and responsibilities working parents experience during the school holiday period when they have to consider childcare arrangements, spending time with their children and work commitments.

Not only were we looking for a new innovative way to support and ease the stress of balancing family and work for our employees but also a program that was exciting and the children loved, which KidsCo Australia was able to help us achieve.

What has your organisation learnt as it has become more inclusive of families? What business benefits can you link to being a family friendly workplace?

100% of the parents who used KidsCo felt valued and supported by TPG Telecom and want to see it as an ongoing employee benefit. KidsCo has allowed our parents to completely embrace their roles as working parents in an environment that understands and encourages work-life balance. Over 90% used KidsCo to keep their children engaged during the school holidays and over 71% of our parents took less time off work for child-related purposes.

Our parents love the convenience and peace of mind from knowing that their children are having an amazing time socialising and learning from qualified teachers so they can focus on their work. In our last program with KidsCo over 85% of parents found a greater structure to their workday.

TPG Telecom understands that there is so much more to life than just a job and that a lot of our team are working parents. By creating a family friendly workplace we can help our parents feel supported, heard and thrive in all aspects of their lives.

TPG Telecom has created a family friendly workplace by supporting family wellbeing and family care in collaboration with KidsCo’s school holiday programs.

Elvin Amitai, Senior Fraud Analyst and working dad at TPG Telecom is proud to work for an organisation that supports families. His son, 8 year old Xavier attends KidsCo’s school holiday programs at dad’s workplace and enjoys seeing a snapshot of what dad gets up to when he’s at work.

Elvin's story

My name is Elvin Amitai, I’m a Senior Fraud Analyst and working dad.

My son, Xavier is 8 years old and loves the different themes and activities KidsCo offers throughout the school holidays. His favourite theme was Gladiator day where he got to dress up as a spartan. The variety of activities KidsCo facilitates in the office and the exciting excursions definitely leaves my son wanting to come back.

Without KidsCo, my son is sent to a local holiday care program or if spots are unavailable he’ll be at home (most likely on his tablet or game console) and occasionally spends time at his grandparents.

Having the ability to take my son out to lunch on KidsCo days makes me far more motivated and productive – it’s the highlight of my day where I can spend quality time during lunch where he tells me about his day and the activities he’s been up to.

Having the option of bringing your child into work with you during the school holidays makes me proud to work for a company that offers this, I know this option isn’t available to a lot of my friends and family who would love to have this available.
